Moving to a new residence? You'll want to look at these top 5 tips!

What are the things that you can do to make your transition to a new home easier? I know we all could use this kind of advice I am about to bestow upon you, because I don't know anyone who hasn't had at least one annoying problem moving. This could have been prevented by being more prepared.

Here are some important tips to keep in mind when arranging for a long distance move.
  • Now is the time to get rid of everything that you don't need. Dedicate one day or weekend prior to your move, to chuck and donate all the things you no longer have a use for !  My favorite is the pick up for veterans. They conveniently come to your house any time of day and even provide you with a huge bag to put everything in. This is a great time to de-clutter and help those in need!
  • So that you don't wait long, have your mail forwarded a few days before you leave so it's there waiting for you when you move in.

  • Make sure to transfer all your utilities accounts to the new humble abode at least 1 day prior and cancel everything at the old place for one day after the move. You definitely want air condition in the new place when you are moving. Especially in the summer!
  • Give everyone your new address a few days in advance so they can prepare a time when they can see you! Some people do it so spur of the moment, they leave their friends helpless to visit for a while.
  • Make sure the pick up, mini van or rental truck is big enough to carry everything and you are able to get everything done in your allotted time frame to avoid extended rental fees.

I'll give you an example of a past moving flub of mine. When I was moving out on my own in college, I didn't realize how much I actually had to move and when it came time to moving day, the truck I rented wasn't big enough! I had to get my friend who had a friend with a pickup truck who I was fortunate to have by my side. He helped the movers carry the rest of the items into the pick up and all was well.

Moral of this story? Had I called a place like 1800 pack rat and got a portable storage unit delivered to my place of residence, I wouldn't have needed to pay extra to the movers, because we went over the allotted time getting everything to move the rest of my things.

It would have saved time and lots of effort if  I just had everything packed up and delivered in one neat lil package, like a pizza.

Good Luck on your move!
